Benson's Treatment Fundraiser

Fundraiser for Stephanie Legrand Huth ·

About
Today is giving Tuesday, a day created to encourage people to do good. In the spirit of that, please consider donating to medical treatments for our two year old son Benson. The youngest of three children, Benson suffered a severe brain injury due to complications at birth. He is diagnosed with HIE- hypoxic, ischemic encephalopathy which carries an increased risk of dying at a young age. However, there are medical treatments available to help the brain heal and form new pathways. We love our son unconditionally and we want him to live a long life. He has been a blessing to our family and given us a new perspective and purpose in this life.

HIE is a lack of oxygen and restricted blood flow to the brain. This damage to Benson’s brain has led to several secondary diagnoses, such as Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. He is also legally blind, has a hearing impairment and can not safely swallow or clear his airway, requiring a feeding tube to be surgically... placed into his stomach; called a G tube.

Despite all this, Benson is the sweetest little boy who has already proven so many doctors wrong with his improvement as a result of medical treatments. We spent the first year of Benson’s life researching our options. Finding that most treatments are not covered by insurance because, although they are evidence based, they are considered alternative.

Up until now, we have been extremely fortunate to have found ways to afford these treatments on our own. These therapies have been necessary and very costly. A single treatment of stem cells from a reputable source cost up to $25,000. Initially we did not feel good asking for help when we could afford the treatments. However, we have exhausted our financial resources. As parents, we will do whatever it takes to help our son, including asking for your help. As difficult and humbling as it is asking for help, we have created this fundraiser in order to give Benson the treatments he so desperately needs.

Any donation is greatly appreciated. 100% of the proceeds will go to Bensons medical treatments. If you are unable to donate, that is ok. We just ask you help spread the word by sharing this fundraiser on your FB feed. Prayers and positive thoughts are always needed and welcomed too! We feel so fortunate to know each and every one of you and appreciate all of the love and support so far. If he’s our angel, you are his warriors. Please help us in this fight.

Thank you,
The Huth family

Birth story:

Benson was born full term on October 23, 2017. During labor, the doctor noted he had a non variable heartbeat. He was not breathing when he was delivered. He had a collapsed lung from meconium aspiration and brain damage from lack of oxygen. They resuscitated him, intubated him and placed him in a hypothermic state to preserve brain function. They did not know how long he went without oxygen but told us it was not severe. Several days passed and Benson continued to be minimally responsive. After the MRI was read they told us the brain damage was in fact very severe and he may not live past two weeks. He was flown on a medical flight to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. The doctors there confirmed the extent of the brain damage and theorized there might have been two events where he went without oxygen. Benson was in the NICU for a little over a month.

Prognosis:

The scariest part of all of this is that Benson is at an increased risk of dying at a young age. Either from the airway impairment mentioned above, catching the common cold (which often turns into pneumonia for children like him) or from a seizure. As his parents, we feel we have to exhaust every single resource in order to give him the best fighting chance.

Therapies and treatments:

We’re currently doing traditional therapies like PT, OT, Speech therapy and Vision Education. Undoubtedly, they have helped. However, the biggest changes we have seen have come from alternative therapies like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Stem Cells and MNRI (a therapy that helps to retrain the brain’s pathways to the body). We have seen improvements with each of these therapies; better eyesight, more interaction, more vocalization and recently after hyperbaric therapy...rolling over on his own! This year we hope to continue these treatments and add a new one. We would like to take Benson to the NAPA center, a world leading therapy center for children with neuromuscular challenges. Benson's brain is still developing and building new neuro pathways. Our prayers are for it to continue to heal and grow. The sooner Benson can receive these treatments and therapies the better chance at life he will have.
